Even in the Quietest Moments

It is strange to think that at the time I was having my epiphany Roger Hodgson was writing or, more likely, had just written this song. Of course, back then I was simply overcome by a sensation of the supreme nature of the light, ruling all of man's affairs.

I couldn't have spoken then on listening stars, deep oceans and the disappointment of just falling asleep. (Well, I was only three years old, after all.) Oddly enough nobody since expressed any desire to discuss the topic. Which is a shame, because I have something to say on the subject by now.

And so, although in a rather strange vein, here goes. It always happens in the evening. It is a tension building up from inside. It depends on the calm of night, when all that's left to do is to wait for the next day. It is particularly strong in winter, when the land is covered in snow and the cold crystallises one's thoughts.

It is disappointing to just fall asleep. When one manages not to, one discovers an incongruity at the bottom of one's heart and is left with the decision which path to choose and what to believe in. And that is a very reassuring experience, because one can feel the weaving of history in one's own heart.

I guess that coincides with
Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination.
Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is!
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
Peace until the rising of the dawn.
Does it help to ask for guidance? In other situations, yes, but in this specific instance, no, because the guidance is already there and only has to surface. So, Rodger Hodgson is conceptualising the experience incorrectly, like so many, who think that you can decide to believe without having first received an insight into the choice that is before you. They feel something wonderful is just beyond the horizon and that they are simply too divided to cling to it. They should think that something terrible is just before them and then be devout enough to face it and live according to it.
