I consider this to be one of the strongest points of the film, the idea that you force yourself to turn into a game that you win or lose depending on the right sequence of moves something that appears to be evident to you, a game, too, that whoever goes first loses unless the other party gracefully allows him to succeed.
There is the promise of that which is not yet, and youth holds it in high esteem, ever hungry to advance, ever uncertain about its progress.
Lacking in this film are children.
And insight - like into in which situations you lose that game.
The world of fantasy - with everything possible and nothing certain.
Though that is certain that even fantasy is restricted to the forms of human perception, the intellectual and emotional analysis of our experiences, and as I said in the beginning, L'année dernière à Marienbad does an admirable job of going through them as far as matters of the heart are concerned.
