A modern parallel to ancient Rome

In the post Die Demut der Caesaren I equated the lines of hexagram 36 Darkening of the Light of the I Ching with the first Roman emperors starting with Caesar, that is with him, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero.

And in the previous post I explored the possibility that not only Nero, but also Caligula could refer to a person of our time.

Here now I consider a modern parallel to Caesar, Caligula, Claudius and Nero, which could possibly be extended onto Augustus and Tiberius as well, but my knowledge of modern history isn't good enough for that.

The modern Caesar would be Napoléon. There's no real need to explain that. So the question is what we are focusing on in Caligula to find a modern counterpart. I'd say we'd have to point to the public defilement of the Roman gods. Then Caligula's counterpart becomes Lenin. And Claudius would consequently be seen as a cautious restaurateur. And his counterpart would be the West during the Cold War, headed by the United States, trying to be as little of an empire as Claudius tried to be of an emperor. And Nero thus is the brazen restaurateur, whose modern counterpart is in the making ever since George W. Bush.

So we see that it's possibly today as it was then: People during Nero's day thought that they had found the beast in Caligula, but as the years of Nero's reign passed, they realised that they were being premature in their judgment. And thus it may repeat, when people realise that the answer to the communistic defilement of Christianity does not restore the light, but ushers in the final chapter of its darkening.

For it is all too clear what has been corrupted, but far less clear, how we can pass the test of our time and cope with the environment and in particular the science and technology that we have created.
