Zurückbauen doesn't mean rebuild
I just heard a clip of people saying build back, audibly struggling to give the words meaning in their own mind, so I assume that the origin of that expression isn't english.
That doesn't mean that it has a german origin, but the word zurückbauen exists in the German language, only that Google doesn't translate it correctly, because zurückbauen doesn't mean rebuild, it means to undo a part of the building process when the latter has gotten out of hand, for instance if there was too much regulation, it would be common in German to say that the regulation needs to be build back (Die Regulierung muß zurückgebaut werden.) The idea is that of clipping a hedge. So, clip is the translation of zurückbauen into plain English.
In any case, when you force yourself to say words that make no sense in your mind, you're making a fool of yourself. I learned that about the time I was 25, which I wouldn't consider early, but prior to that it'd simply never been an issue.
