Steadfastness
It is in the nature of a man's belief, whether his hope can be stolen from him.
When a man believes that the history of the world is written, that everything follows the line of its development acting the law it embodies, his last hope will always stay with him.
But when he believes that history is open-ended and his own nature subject to modification it is only necessary for things to go awry to steal his hope of belonging to something higher than him.
Conversely the man who believes the latter will be tied in all his actions to the decrees of reason when he assumes responsibility for others, while the man who believes the former retains a degree of freedom, for he is not the sole cause of the fate of those entrusted to him.
Modern man, it seems, embraces poison out of instinct. Then his heart sickens. But it is only a dream, and God is waiting beyond the vision of our eyes for us to take our place before Him.
