The case for open-ended logarithmic ratings
Really, how are you to rate Depeche Mode's albums? If Violator is a 100 and you rate in terms of percentage, A Broken Frame would be about a 25.
Well, but other bands've made albums as well. Let's say the self-titled The Doors album is a 100, Violator is then about a 12.5 and A Broken Frame a 3.125. And if The Prodigy Experience is a 100, The Doors is only about a 12.5 and A Broken Frame a 0.390625.
Differently put, if we gave 10 stars to Supertramp's Crime of the Century, we would give 5 stars to The Prodigy Experience, 2.5 stars to Breakfast in America, Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis, What Crisis? and Indelibly Stamped, 1.25 stars to The Fat of the Land and that would be it, because we wouldn't have to give a single star to any album ever again.
So, what happens? You end up giving albums like Violator 9 stars, because you need room to differentiate A Broken Frame from Tears for Fears' The Hurting.
In order to escape this, we need a ladder of standards, each standard crushing the previous one by knocking it out of its park, just like for earthquakes measured in the Richter scale:
