The moment when you realise that...

...the United States are the only country in the whole wide world in which folk music is all about adultery and murder.

While listening to a flower power hit compilation, oddly enough coinciding with a recent botanical event in Southern California that
  1. gives the lie to It Never Rains in Southern California and
  2. helps you out in a big way If You're Going to San Francisco,
I came across The Mamas & The Papas and I was thinking that there was potential for entire albums, so I listened to If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears and had to agree with the Roling Stone magazine for once, in so far as the album sounds as if it was meant to be played in the background at a party at Jack Nicholson's place and I have no interest whatsoever in imagining having been there and so, rather sadly actually, because the musical talent is there, the album is worthless to me.

But then I wondered: Is it fair that the Rolling Stone magazine singled out The Mamas & The Papas among folk singers in this way?

Well, here we have adultery (at minimum promiscuity and when adultery is derived from adulterate it is the same thing) as well:

here murder on top of it:

and here attempted murder:

So, the suggestion that The Mamas & The Papas would have perverted something pure is something on which I do not agree with the Rolling Stone magazine.
